Cable TV Alternatives for a Shoestring Budget

OK so someone asked me today if I knew of any great alternatives to cable. Sure I do! There are many great alternatives to cable. I decided to make a list of my favorites.

Take note, you may need other equipment or services such as an HD antenna, a Smart TV, a gaming console, a laptop, and an internet connection. You will need a high speed internet connection for all options other than local TV. You also have the option of streaming services on you laptop and plugging that into your HDTV. Smart TV's have internet capabilities so work great with these services.

Sure, these arent all the options but these are a few that I use and they are all completely legal!

1. Network Websites- Want to catch a show go directly to the source. Most networks post their hit shows for free on their website so go check them out! VH1, Bravo, NBC, BET and many other networks air most of their popular shows right on their website.

Pro: You can watch both local and cable network shows absolutely free!

Con: You wont be able to catch the shows as they air. You may have to catch the show from the next day up to the following week. You may not have access to old episodes. You wont have access to many premium channel networks like HBO, Showtime(Showtime does let you sample select full episodes)and, Starz without a cable subscription.

2. Netflix- My husband loves NETFLIX! We never get bored with the great selection from them. You can find TV shows, Movies, Documentaries, etc. all in one place.

Pro: You have access to instant streaming for only $7.99 a month, add DVD's by mail for around $10. You can keep the DVD as long as you like and when you send it back your next DVD is on the way....these folks are super fast! You have access on many devices. It is compatible with gaming systems such as XBox, PS3, and Wii. It is also available on many droid devices, it works great on my HTC EVO.

Con: While you may watch episode after episode and season after season you wont find the current season on Netflix. Some titles are instant and other titles you will have to request by mail. If you put off a movie you want to see be aware it may not be available instantly the next time you go to watch it. I don't know often they cycle their instant content but be aware it is cycled so if your too late you may have to order it by mail.

3. Hulu- Hulu is a great site very similar to Netflix but free! Hulu is an online video service that offers a selection of hit shows, clips, movies and more. Hulu is free and legal through advertising that advertising runs during normal commercial breaks. Hulu acquires the rights to distribute its videos, making them available to users legally. Hulu Plus is an ad-supported subscription service that offers current and back season shows from ABC, Comedy Central, FOX, NBC, and MTV to connected devices for $7.99 monthly.

Pro: Hulu is absolutely free! It is now compatible with PS3,(Yay! just found this out)iPad, and iPhone. It will soon be available on XBox 360 and Android devices.

Con: Hulu's free content isn't as large as Hulu Plus or Netflix. Its not yet available on other gaming consoles or Droid devices. Hulu is not available internationally or in Canada. Hulu states, "We've always been very public about our intentions of being an international service, but do not have any details to share at this time."

4. XfinityTV(Formerly Fancast)- Extremely similar to Hulu, in fact there is some sort of relationship between the two websites. This webservice is owned by Comcast.

Pro: Much of the programming is free. Fancast seems to have free programming available that you would find on Hulu plus at cost.

Con: Some programming is locked and only available to Comcast subscribers. Doesn't seem to be available on any other devices other than the PC, iPad, and iPhone.

5. RedBox- Movies cost just a dollar per day. There is no sign-up, all you need is a credit/debit card. You can find many of the latest DVD Movie releases at RedBox.
Did you know that McDonalds owns RedBox?

Pro: You can get free RedBox movies with the Redbox movie codes issued every week. RedBox now offers games for $2.

Con: People have had issues with receiving the wrong movie from people returning bogus DVD's back to the machine. Some are saying that they have been returning their DVD's on time, but the machine is not recognizing the ID sticker and not giving them credit for the return. Some people have been charged an additional dollar for every day that they thought they had the discs and then RedBox charges them for the cost of the DVD. I haven't experienced any of these issues but did have a problem returning a video because the kiosk was full. It was an inconvenience because we had to drive further to another kiosk.

6. Local TV- all you need is an HD antenna and you are in business!

Pro: You can watch all the major local networks(depending on your reception)absolutely free. You can watch the local network shows as they air. You get a few bonus channels on almost every network station you recieve with the HD antenna. This is the only way I know how you can watch sports without cable service.

Con: Your channel lineup may vary depending on your geographic location and antenna. No cable networks. Definitely not a huge selection.

There are a ton of ways to get your TV fix on a Shoestring budget, these were a few of my favorite and completely legal ways.

Today a Facebook friend asked if anyone had any volunteering ideas for her children. Volunteering is something I have always love to do whether it was just helping someone out or actually volunteering my time to an organization.

Our first volunteer experience began when my oldest daughter, now 14, was around five years old. We volunteered for a program that raised funds for the the AIDS Council of North Eastern New York.

"The AIDS Council’s Help Fight AIDS Through Books & Music project is a completely volunteer-driven program that sells new and gently-used books, music, and movies as well as entertainment books and plush animals to raise money to support the AIDS Council’s client Services Emergency Fund. This experience was really rewarding because we do have a loved one that is an active client of the program. We need to do what we can to raise awareness and teach our youth about this disease that is devastating to our communities.

We have also been involved with feeding the homeless and feeding the community. We plan to do 7 acts of charity throughout the year and we will keep that updated right here.

Youth Assisting Youth is a non-profit charitable organization that provides a peer mentoring service to improve life prospects for at risk and newcomer children. YAY matches children aged 6-15 with trained and dedicated Youth Volunteers aged 16-29 who act as positive role models. Since 1976 YAY has helped more than 20,000 young people.

Do Something

United We Serve
United We Serve is a nationwide service initiative that helps meet growing social needs resulting from the economic downturn. Serve.gov is your online resource for not only finding volunteer opportunities in your community, but also creating your own.

These are all some really great organizations. Check them out and see where you fit in. I have two organizations I want to work with this year.

The first is Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. Their Mission is to raise money and awareness of childhood cancer causes, primarily research into new treatments and cures and to encourage and empower others, especially children, to get involved and make a difference for children with cancer. The second is Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup.

Whip My Hair

OK, so I have started this page for all things Natural Hair. I am a big time lover of being natural! Over the summer I took down my one year old locs. They were horrible, because my hair was so curly it sometimes curled and then loc'd that way. I had some short, some long, some loc'd, and some not, it was a huge mess. It took me 5 months to take them out (I know thats a long time, its a long story I will discuss later) and once I got them out that super long hair I had was no more. It was still very long but it was nowhere near my behind like it was before.

One of the big problems I encountered after "the takedown" was breakage and dryness. My hair was also super tangled but I think that was related to the dryness. I would wash, condition, and style and it would look great. The very next day it would be dry and horrible to manage. I dont know about anyone else, but I dont want to spend an hour combing my hair.

I am on a journey to finding the best natural hair products. I am also looking for products that wont break the bank. Who wants to have their hair looking gorgeous but cant afford to go out to show it off. No more of those $30 jars of hair products that we skimp on using because we dont want to run out. Half of these products are for natural hair but arent completely natural themselves....How about that? Yeah I said it! There are products out there that work great for our hair and dont cost a fortune. There are also great recipes for products you can make right at home with some of the things you already have in your own kitchen.

For all those of you that wanted to know whats with the hair type numbers? Whats a "prepoo"? What products should I use on my hair? And... How can I grow long hair? I am going to explore all of that right here. And for all those with locs, I havent given up on them. They are not for me, but most of my children are loc'd. I will demonstrate to I maintain their locs as well as how I style them.

Once I find what works I will begin a hair regimen that I share with my readers. Please feel free to share as well!

Almost done

Well as you can see the blog is almost done! I am so excited! Its not exactly what I wanted but its getting there. I figured as long as it was presentable its fine. I haven't put the page links or the drop down menu yet but its coming!

So I said this blog was going in a new direction. I still plan to post coupon deals but I will also have some tutorials on how to coupon shop. I will also be doing coupon webinars so stay tuned for that as well.

Now for the new stuff............................................

I have been a homeschooler for 7 years now and have gathered quite a bit of info over the years. I follow blogs of some of the most awesome homeschoolers I have ever seen. I also have friends on Facebook that all have shared some really great info with me. So I want to give that to my readers as well.

I will be including curriculum I have created as well as links to other great resources. And because I'm a couponer I know how to find a great deal so be prepared to find some of the best homeschool bargains here.

My blog will also share recipes especially awesome vegetarian recipes as I am making the transition from pescatarian to vegetarian to vegan. I will also be trying out some great raw food recipes and reviewing a few cookbooks along the way.

Ok so I have decided that I need to stop neglecting my blog. I learned so much about blog design but got frustrated with all the mistakes I made so I gave up. Now I have forgotten much of everything. I guess I didnt really feel like going through the whole learn blog design process. But if I can post on Facebook I can post here. So being that I am a homeschooler I have decided to make it a lesson! My teenage daughter and I are going to make this blog beautiful. I will make a lesson for each aspect of this blog design process. This is great since she is an artist. So stay tuned.....Oh and this blog is going in an entirely different direction.

Movies

The movies are fun but for myself, my husband and our six children its too much. I'd much rather order a movie through playstation. But I miss that whole theater experience.

Regal Entertainment group has the Free Family Film Festival every Tuesday and Wednesday at 10 am. Go to their website and find the schedule for the free showing in your area!

Bowling

Summer Reading

Barnes and Noble has a summer reading program.
Here's How It Works:

I took my children to the local library today. They had a similar program. This program gave you a free book upfront to start reading with. Coupon Frenzy

Well my week sure has been busy and I am not done yet. I have been constantly kicking myself over the deals I have been missing due to my lack of organization. So whats the solution?

A coupon binder!

Now I have had this binder for a few months now and have neglected to use because of my busy family life. I even had the nerve to splurge on the card protectors and not use them. Thank God I wasn't running around with the bag of coupons that I had to sort through to match up my deals, what a headache!

So all week I have been clipping coupons and categorizing them in the binder and boy has this been a job...whew!

I will post a picture of the final product. I sure wish I had done a before and after shot, but the end result is most important. Anyway I am not done but when I am everyone can see. I will be so much easier to find that coupon I am looking for. YAY!

Homeschooling Help

OK so, did I let you know I was a homeschooler? Nah, I didn't did I? Well, I am also a homeschooler.

I have been homeschooling for the past 5 years and I am loving it. But it wasn't always so easy and I didn't always love it. I had trouble keeping up with my lesson plans when things didn't run smoothly for her. It had me frustrated just as much as she was.

Until Time 4 Learning popped up. I was trying to find online curriculum and always had a difficult time finding a program that didn't cost an arm and a leg. Somehow I stumbled upon Time 4 Learning which uses the popular Compass Learning software. I downloaded the trial version, and I was amazed. I then looked for the price anticipating some outrageous fee and to my surprise it was only $19.95 a month. That right $19.95 a month this is no typo. For each additional child it is $14.95 a month, which is great since I also have a kindergarten aged child. They also have awesome discounts if you pay quarterly or yearly.

Each unit is made up of multimedia lessons, interactive exercises, printable worksheets, and an assessment. The interactive programs keeps my children busy and constantly wanting to do more schoolwork. This software also keeps track of your child's assignments so that you are able to print their grades, tests, etc. Sort of like a report card. And all the work isn't online there are also resource activity sheets you can print so your child can also do things the old-fashioned way. The only down side is this program is it only goes up to eighth grade, I hope that maybe in the near future they could develop a high school program because this is the best I have seen.

I know this is a blog so I could tell you more about it but I would just like to say it speaks for itself. I know you will absolutely love this program. And for your younger children (K-3) try Brain POP Jr. This service is also inexpensive. I have noticed the prices have changed a bit but its nothing outrageous. For homeschoolers and non- homeschoolers its $99 a year. The non-homeschooling families also have the option of paying $9.95 a month with an annual subscription. This is site is awesome and also has great interactive programs for the children.

So hey go check these sites out I am sure you will love them.

Oh yeah! I almost forgot, how do you like my blog design? Well I got it from Pyzam. There are also other blog templates sites out there just do a search for "blog template" or "blog skin" and you will be sure to find several free sites out there. There are also sites you can have customized for a fee. I just always prefer FREE!

Later on I will create a custom blog design on my own when I find the time and patience. For now this serves its purpose.

Who knew chocolate could be politically correct? Apparently, Mars Snackfood US, maker of M&Ms, Snickers, 3 Musketeers, Milky Way and other American favorites, does. The company has launched the equivalent of a filibuster to draw attention to competitors that substitute vegetable oil for cocoa butter in their products. So, what’s in it for you? One of the biggest chocolate giveaways in history. Every Friday through the end of September, you stand a chance of getting a free chocolate bar or candy because of the Mars Real Chocolate Relief Act.
Mars initiated the program last week, giving out coupons for chocolate treats to the first 250,000 people who logged on at RealChocolate.com on Friday and requested a coupon. The response was so large that Mars is doubling the chance for free chocolate this week. A half-million coupons will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis and mailed to those who qualify. Coupons are redeemable for any full-size Mars chocolate product and are limited to one per person per week.
What’s the purpose? According to Mars, federal regulations stipulate that the only source of fat (except milk fat) in a chocolate product should be cocoa butter. Mars says it uses only 100% cocoa butter and urges consumers to look at labels whenever they buy chocolate to be sure they’re getting the real thing.
Of course, while bringing consumers’ attention to chocolate standards, Mars is also trying to lift spirits in a recession-plagued nation, describing the promotion as “a massive effort (that) aims to spread joy across America by giving away as many as 7 million full-size packages of Mars chocolate.”

More Grocery Help...

OK, so I have found that their are many sites that will help organize your shopping trip, by matching up the sales with the coupons. Some even point out all the free deals which is great. My only problem is........the really good ones cost!

Take for instance The Grocery Game I have heard alot of great things about it but at this time I just cant swing it. It would cost me $35 a month to keep up with the six stores I shop at. But it's a great program. Perhaps I may join later or I will just stick with the hard work of searching out my deals and saving that $35 for food. Right now, The Grocery Game is currently running a $1 for a month special, so if your interested please check it out.

Another cool site I discovered was Grocio. This site had an amazing intro video showing you how to plan your shopping trip using Grocio. You enter your shopping list and any coupons you may have and it would compare stores and even give you your expected TOTAL! It even goes a step further to list the current store promotions and contact info for the store. This is cool, I was like sign me up. I received this message saying I had to wait for an email confirmation, so I was all ready. As I sat their waiting for the "ding" from my yahoo messenger to alert me that I had mail, but instead I sat in total silence. Nothing. I continued reading the message stating that the confirmations aren't automatic and I would have to wait for it to be manually done. Its all good, I can wait I haven't had it all this time so I will live.

Anyway when I get set up on Grocio I will post my personal experience with the site.
